About this course

Clay has been shaped by human hands for 25,000 years. There is deep wisdom in this ancient practice — wisdom that modern productivity culture has nearly erased. This course brings it back. Learn wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques alongside meditation practices that transform pottery from a hobby into a contemplative art. Feel the clay. Hear the wheel. Be here.

1

Centering: Clay & Self

30 min

The first skill every potter learns is centering clay on the wheel. It is also the first mindfulness lesson: you cannot center clay if you are not centered yourself.

Before touching clay, sit with your hands on your knees for 3 minutes. Feel gravity. Feel weight. Now carry that stillness to the wheel.
2

The Wedging Meditation

25 min

Wedging removes air bubbles and homogenizes clay. It is repetitive, physical, and profoundly calming — like kneading bread for your creative practice.

Count each wedge. At 50, stop and notice: has your breathing changed? Has your mind quieted?
3

Opening the Form

35 min

Push your thumbs into centered clay and open a vessel. This moment — creating space from solid — is one of the most satisfying in all of craft.

As you open the clay, notice: what are you making space for in your life right now?
